What to do during your stay...Although you may just want to kick off your boots and relax on the veranda with a good book and cold drink, or perhaps contemplate the awesome power of a summer storm rolling over the desert, there is plenty to see and do during your stay at Casa Adobe B&B.  Here are a few suggestions...
Bird Watching...More than 50% of bird species in North America are found in southwest New Mexico and southeast Arizona. The Peloncillo and Chiricahua "Sky Island" mountain ranges flanking the Rodeo valley harbor many bird species unique to the area. Found in the immediate area of Casa Adobe B&B are White-Tailed Kites, Whiskered Screech Owl, Bendire's Thrasher, Cactus Wren, Cassin's Sparrow, Harris's Hawk, Golden Eagle, Red-Tail Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Red-Wing Black bird, Scaled Quail, Gambel's Quail, Ground Owls, and many more. New Mexico's only documented Black Vulture was photographed here in 1996. To learn more about birding in the area click HERE. Click HERE to view some great images of birds in the Rodeo area.
Chiricahua Mountains...Experience the magic and grandeur of the Chiricahua Mountains, spectacular Cave Creek Canyon, Chiricahua National Monument, Rustler's Park (at 8600+ feet), and pristine Rucker Canyon, all within a short drive from Casa Adobe B&B. Each of these areas offers inspiring scenery and vista points, solitude, fabulous day hiking, bird watching, extended backpacking, horseback riding, or mountain biking experiences (learn more...).
Peloncillo Mountains...The Peloncillo Mountains offer hikers solitude, spectacular vistas, and a highly diverse range of habitat for observing numerous species of flora and fauna. Click HERE to learn more about the natural heritage of the Peloncillos. A good hiker's entry point to the Peloncillo Mountains is Owl Canyon located just a few miles southeast of Rodeo and Casa adobe B&B. The trail is primitive (no signage, water or facilities of any kind) and watch out for those pesky rattlers and flash floods in the summer monsoons. Visit the Geronimo Surrenders Monument near Apache about 12 miles south of Casa Adobe B&B along Old Highway 80. This is also the access point to Skeleton Canyon and reported Conquistador buried treasure (Learn more HERE). Skeleton Canyon is also where many infamous outlaws like Johnny Ringo and the Clanton brothers sought refuge from justice. The canyon has a colorful but violent history and one historian has commented that over 100 humans lost their lives here, and that this canyon is haunted. (Submitted by Harry & Ingrid McNeer).
Visit the new Chiricahua desert Museum in Rodeo, New Mexico...
Chiricahua Desert Museum...Visit the new Chiricahua Desert Museum just two miles north of Casa Adobe B&B at the "Corner". They are still so new that they do not yet have their official website up yet, but HERE is their FaceBook page. The museum features informative natural history displays, live exhibits of local reptile species, gifts, fine art and much more.
Horseback Riding...Unleash your cowboy or cowgirl spirit and come ride the rugged wilderness trails of southern Arizona and New Mexico. Just a stones throw from Casa Adobe you can enjoy some of the best guided horseback riding adventures anywhere - bar none! Check out Hideout Ranch and Price Canyon Ranch...
Rock Climbing... Granite Gap and City of Rocks State Park offer world-class bouldering, scrambling, and technical rock climbing that is on a par with Joshua Tree National Park in California ~ without the crowds of course.
Astronomy...Rodeo and the surrounding area is one of the darkest deep-sky sites anywhere and astronomers from around the globe congregate here to take full advantage of our great climate and near-perfect observing conditions. Many area residents have sophisticated observatories that can be operated from anywhere in the world via the Internet. A great example can be found HERE. But you really don't need a million dollar instrument to be awestruck by our night skys ~ just bring yourself and a good pair of binoculars and you will not be disappointed.
Landscape Photography...The Sky Islands and surrounding desert biomes offer a diversity of photogenic landscapes. Click HERE for a few examples. From the standpoint of landscape photography, the area remains largely undiscovered. Casa Adobe offers the perfect launching point for you daily photographic forays. Recruit one of our local guides to show you some of the best hidden locations.
UFO Watching...Yes, you read that correctly! ~ We've seen them and we are not alone! Don't believe us? Just speak to some of the old-time ranchers, some of whom are pilots themselves. Here are a couple of official reports listed by the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP)...Report #1: Feb. 19, 1951; Rodeo, NM: USAF? C-54 pilot saw a green flare [fireball?] pass his plane. (BBU Sparks, Project 1947; FUFOR Index); Report #2: September 25, 1965; Rodeo, NM (Blue Book Unknown 39971): It is 10 pm and witnesses Dr. George Walton, physical chemist, and wife spotted two round white objects that flew side-by-side, at 30-50' altitude, pacing their car for approximately six minutes.
Fine Art Galleries...Several fine art and crafts galleries are located in Rodeo within an easy stroll from Casa Adobe. Galleries include the Roger McKasson Studio & Gallery featuring original oils, watercolors, and bronze sculptures; the Chiricahua Gallery featuring the works of numerous local artists and craftspersons; and the Desert Moon Gallery featuring fine art landscape photographs and hand-drawn desert graphics (opening Summer 2010).
Wine Tasting...If wine tasting suits you, plan a visit to Colibri Vineyard in nearby Whitetail Canyon. "Our most recent releases offer a range of fine Rhône style red wines, each uniquely charactered and expressing the “terroir” of our unique vineyard location and our dedication to small lot vinification." Plus - its just a beautiful place to visit!
Regional Points of Interest...Located just 75 minutes south are the historic mining towns of Bisbee and Tombstone, AZ and 90 minutes north are Silver City, NM and the unspoiled Gila Wilderness. A great one-day adventure includes a round-trip to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument where you will experience first-hand the mystery of the Anasazi people now lost forever in the winds of time.
When you finish...with all that exhausting activity, return to Casa Adobe for a relaxing shower followed by dinner at the Rodeo Tavern (a block away ~ you can walk!). Or prepare your own dinner in the privacy of your own ranch-style kitchen. End the day by relaxing on your veranda and gazing up into a black star-studded sky the likes of which is rarely witnessed by mere mortals...
